Materials needed

To complete this lesson, you will need:

  • Journal or notebook
  • Pens or pencils
  • Field guides
  • Internet access

Your tasks for this lesson

To begin this lesson, start by asking your child what they think nature study is and what it means to them. Then, ask them to write or draw out their ideas in their notebooks or journal.

Next, discuss the meaning of nature study with your child.

  • Nature study is the practice of observing and learning about the natural world around us. It involves using all of our senses to explore and appreciate nature. And it can be done anywhere – in the countryside, in your local park, in your back garden or even at home.
  • Nature study is important because by learning about the natural world, we can better understand our place in it and how we can help care for it. We can also develop a deeper appreciation for the beauty and complexity of nature.

Now, ask your child to write down in their notebooks some of the things they have noticed in nature recently. Encourage them to use all of their senses and be as detailed as possible.

Discuss some of the things  they can observe in nature. For example, different types of plants and animals, weather patterns and changes in the environment throughout the year.

Then, encourage your child to do an internet search or use field guides to identify some of the plants or animals they have observed and discuss how naming things can help us learn more about them.

Finally, finish the lesson by asking your child what they have learned about nature study and why it is important. Encourage them to continue observing and learning about the natural world around them.

Wrap up this lesson

To complete this lesson invite your child to share their notebook or journal entries and discuss what they have learned or observed.

Then, ask them to write a short reflection about what they have learned about nature study and why it is important.

Remember – Introducing the concept of nature study helps you set the stage for further exploration and learning about the natural world, while encouraging your child to observe and appreciate nature and develop a deeper connection to their world.
